Mueller, (Krestovok Buyerak) was settled on August 16, 1767 with 113 people. It had a population of 142 in 1773 and 2,488 in 1912. It dropped to 877 in 1926. The Russian name means "crossed gully". Mueller is sandwiched between German Danilowka on the north and Russian Shcherbakovka to the south. In 1798 all the villagers except one were farmers. There was one joiner.
There were no orchards or mills and little grain was sold as the colonists needed it for their own use. The soil was poor and they were unable to grow oats. There was sufficient building stone available, but there were few stone buildings.
Alexander Ebel was born Oct 1893 in Mueller and died in Saskatchewan in 1970. He left Russia in 1913 and was the only member of this family to leave Mueller. He has numerous descendants in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Alexander had two known brothers, Jacob (1905-1982) and Friedrich (1907-1990). Alexander's father, Friedrich Ebel died in Russia in 1940. Friedrich had two sisters, Amalie who died in 1942, and Katherina who died in 1943. Alexander's grandson, Brian, visited Russia recently and shares his experiences in the Village of Mueller.
Original Settlers of Kolony Mueller
Bill Wiest received the original settlers list for Mueller from Dr. Igor Pleve. The document was translated from Russian by Rick Rye of the AHSGR staff in Lincoln.
Mr. Rye had the following comments. This list is a Kuhlberg list. Ivan Kuhlberg was probably of German descent, a clerk in one of the "collegium" established by Peter the Great. He seems to have been the chief clerk in the Oranienbaum office of immigration, the rough equivalent of our Ellis Island. Included are possible names of villages in Germany. Experience has shown that sometimes these records are quite inaccurate. Rye was not clear about the adopted male listed in family 29. The Russian word can mean "frozen to death" or escheat, a legal term for something remaining after an estate is settled. It might perhaps be best to say that his parents died, as was indicated in family 10.
All settlers were dispatched to Mueller on August 16, 1767. The total of the colony is 57 males, 56 females, totaling 113 souls.
