She was a member of First Mennonite Church in Bluffton. She was a children's author and published 14 books, most of which are still in print. Her books have been translated into seven languages, and she has received numerous awards all over the world. Most of her books were historical fiction and were published in Canada while her late husband was a professor at Conrad Grable College in Waterloo, Ontario. She met her husband while interviewing him for the Evening Kansas Republican in Newton. Survivors include: two sons, Timothy Smucker of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas Smucker of New York City; a daughter, Rebecca Smucker-Blick of Douglas, Mich.; three brothers, Lander Claassen of Florida, Walter Claassen of Newton and Morris Claassen of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Born to John Henry and Clara Victoria (Wilmoth) Claver. Mrs. Schmidt was the youngest of four. Her brother, Charles, died as the result of an accident on one of the farm horses. Her mother died when Edith was 13, leaving her father and sister, Edna, to raise her. When she was 16, her father died from an accident involving the same horse that injured her brother. In 1922, Edna married Oscar Peterson. She married William (Bill) SCHMIDT on Feb. 14, 1925. In 1975, the couple were married for 50 years. After Bill died in 1983.
