From Billings MT Gazette, Saturday 11 Feb 1933
Submitted by Eugene Stahl
Eckhardt, Jacob 1860-1933 - The lifeless body of Jacob Eckhardt, 72 years old, was found Friday (Feb. 10, 1933) afternoon hanging from a rafter in the garage at the rear of his home, 3926 Second avenue south. Deputy Sheriffs who investigated the case said they saw no evidence of foul play.
Eckhardt, according to the story related to officers by his wife, had sent her downtown to do some shopping. She was reluctant about going because he had been morose of late and feared that such a thing would occur. On her departure, she told the officers, it was understood that he would go to a neighbor’s house. Returning from her shopping tour she began to look for him and found him hanging by his neck in the garage. His body was warm. Mrs. Eckhardt called for help and held the body up until neighbors arrived. The rope was cut and the body was let down.
Dr. Earl M. Farr, county physician, arrived shortly afterwards and on examining the body at 3:45 p.m. said that Eckhardt had been dead probably for a half-hour. His neck was broken. Deputy Sheriffs Ed Penrod and Dan Stephenson learned in questioning his widow that Eckhardt had no serious financial worries, but had been in ill health for the last two years.
Eckhardt was born in Russia on Sept. 22, 1860 and came to this country 44 years ago. For a number of years he lived near Lincoln NE. He lived on a farm west of Billings from 1907 until he retired and moved to the city about six years ago. He was a member of the German Congregational church.
Besides his widow, he is survived by 9 children, Mrs. George Steinmiller, Scottsbluff NE; Mrs. William Calhoun, Sparks NV; Mrs. H. Stroh and Mrs. George Schlenze, Sacramento CA; Mrs. J. J. Marker, Mrs. J. Weil, Jr., and Jacob, Conrad and Henry E. Eckhardt, all of Billings. He is also survived by 45 grandchildren. Five brothers are also living: Jacob, George, John and Paul Eckhardt, all of Greeley CO, and Henry Eckhardt, Lincoln NE. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
