ELLINWOOD - Nadine L. Schartz, 76, died Aug. 17, 2009. She was born Aug. 9, 1933, to James L. and Agnes Nichols Canfield.
On April 22, 1953, she married WARREN G. SCHARTZ. He died July 14, 2007. Survivors include: son, Curtis; daughters, Linda Kasselman, Debra Stickney, and Brenda Birzer; brother, Jim Canfield; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 p.m. followed by vigil service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. Funeral 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ellinwood. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Edna I. Keller, 90, died Sept. 26, 2009, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born June 8, 1919 in McPherson to William and Hedvig C. (Ross) Carley. She grew up in the Luray area.

On Nov. 26, 1944, she married JOHN W. KELLER in Hutchinson. He died in 1982. A homemaker, she assisted her husband a pastor and taught child evangelism fellowship classes and Bible classes for children and women in her home.

She is survived by a son, Kent Keller, Stockton; three daughters, Joy Haiducek, Olympia, WA; Donna M. Reed, Tucson, AZ; and Rosa Lee Fraizer, Conroe, TX; 10 grandchildren; 11 gt. grandchildren; and one gt. gt. grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Keller, and a sister, Dorothy Zarden.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Sat., Oct. 3, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Bob Dalke presiding. Burial will be at the Luray Cemetery, Luray. Memorials to Hutchinson Wesleyan Church, in care of the mortuary.

Bernice Herman, 74, Plainville, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at her home. She was born Feb. 10, 1935, in McCracken to Daniel and Anna (McGaughey) Casey. She graduated from Bazine High School.

She married HERB HERMAN on June 20, 1953, in Mc Cracken. He preceded her in death Jan. 25, 2008. She worked for Unrein Drug Store, Plainville.

Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Slater, Wichita, Lori Hill, Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Judy Wiggins, Oklahoma City; a brother, Edmund Casey, Hutchinson; two sisters, Rita Fitzpatrick, Basye, Va., and Neva Fehrenbach, Assaria; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville; burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends can sign the book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Plainville. A Ladies Guild rosary will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a vigil at 7 p.m., both at the funeral chapel. MESA, Ariz. -- Vivian M. (Casey Steinle) Cates passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, at the age of 84 in Mesa from complication of a broken leg and emphysema. She was born April 11, 1925, at home in Barton County, Kan., to John Henry and Philomena Eckert Casey. She was raised in Kansas and lived in Dubuque, Kan., and Bunker Hill, Kan., following her marriage to HAROLD STEINLE in 1945 until his death in a farming accident in 1949. Until 1955, she resided in the Russell, Kan., area.
In 1955, she married PERRY W. CATES and then traveled throughout the western United States from oil boom town to town, following her husband's career.
Preceding Vivian in death were her parents, Henry and Philomena Casey; younger brother, Don Casey; first husband of three years, Harold Steinle; and second husband of 47 years, Perry Cates.
Survivors include sons, Harlan Steinle and wife Bonna, of Mesa, and Randall Steinle and wife Sharon, of Lakin, Kan.; sisters, Loretta Ross, of Russell, and Mary Weeks, of Alpharetta, Ga.; one grandson, Dustin Steinle, of Houston; two granddaughters, Danica Steinle, of Phoenix, and Kyree Steinle, of Lakin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cates' desires to not have services have been honored. The body has been cremated and inurnment will be at a later date.

MESA, Ariz. — Vivian M. (Casey/Steinle) Cates, 84, passed away July 17 (2009) at Mesa, from complications of a broken leg and emphysema. NEWTON - Judy Elaine Busenitz, 67, died Aug. 19, 2009, at the Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita. She was born March 17, 1942, the daughter of Emil and Millicent Dart Claassen.
On Oct. 20, 1963, she married DONALD BUSENITZ. He survives. Other survivors include: daughter, Emily Busenitz; son, Edward; sisters, Joan Wulf and Bev Hunter.

NEWTON — Judy Elaine Busenitz, 67, of Newton, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 2009) at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. Judy was born on March 17, 1942, in Newton, the daughter of Emil and Millicent Dart Claassen. They preceded her in death. She married DONALD BUSENITZ on Oct. 20, 1963, in Newton and became a hard-working farm wife for 46 years.

Judy was young at heart and, with a twinkle in her eye, she captured the hearts of many friends of all ages. Schoolchildren took many trips to the Busenitz farm and, sometimes, Judy would take the animals to the schools. For 30 years, Judy faithfully taught Newton Weekday Bible School. She also shared her faith and goodness with children at Newton Bible Church as a Sunday school teacher and Awana leader. She loved kids. For 40 years, she provided leadership to Harvey County 4-H families. She was a lifetime member of 4-H. Judy enjoyed canning and baking for the county and state fairs; planning and preparing for the fair brought her great joy. Donating blood was an important part of her life; Judy was a 12-gallon donor. The Newton Kansan recognized Judy as “Woman of the Year in Church & Religion.” She was a giving and kind person. Everyone really liked Judy.

Survivors include her husband, Donald, of the home; daughter, Emily Busenitz; son, Edward Busenitz; two sisters, Joan Wulf, and Bev Hunter and her husband, Gary, all of Newton.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. A Celebration of Judy’s life will follow at 11 a.m. at Newton Bible Church.

She died April 2, 2006. Survivors include: three children, Regina Yoder, Marjorie Sommerfeld and husband Lyle, and Dale and wife Anita; two brothers, Levi, and Clarence; five sisters, Agnes Schertz, Linda Goossen, Dora Ehmann, Alvera Thiessen and Evelyn Fisher; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. HESSTON — Edward R. C. Classen, 87, passed away Friday (Nov. 13, 2009) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. He was born on March 8, 1922, in Meade, the son of Peter L. and Sarah Reimer Classen.
He had worked as a truck driver with King Construction Co. for more than 30 years. He was a member of Koerner Heights Mennonite Brethren Church in Newton and had volunteered at Victory in the Valley in Wichita for many years.
On July 30, 1944, he married SARA REIMER. She passed away on April 2, 2006.
He is survived by his three children: Regina Yoder of Newton, Marjorie Sommerfeld and husband Lyle of Andover, and Dale Classen and wife Anita of Salem, Ore.; two brothers, Levi Classen and Clarence Classen; five sisters; Agnes Schertz, Dora Ehmann, Alvera Thiessen and Evelyn Fisher; 12 grandchildren, December and Jerry Worthington, Terry and Melanie Yoder, Larissa Yoder, Kel Sommerfeld, Kimberly and Gene Paulsen, Tyson Sommerfeld, Melinda and Mark Dunford, and Brian Classen; and 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, Jonny and David Worthington, Madeline and Marianna Yoder, Sierra Collins, and Kate, Allie and Nicholas Paulsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Katherine (Isaac) Classen; four brothers, Henry Classen, Dr. Peter Classen, Harold Classen and Jake Classen; and one sister, Elizabeth Loewen. His sister, Linda Goossen, passed away Nov. 15. (2009)
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston with Chaplain Bev Baumgartner officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. HESSTON - Esther Ratzlaff, 78, passed away December 6, 2009, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston. She was born September 3, 1931, in Meade County, KS, the daughter of Abe L. and Agnes Bartel Classen. She had worked as an elementary school teacher and as a librarian for Newton Public Library. She was a charter member of Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church, Hesston, where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher. For 17 years she had been a teacher for Newton Weekday Bible School, Newton. On July 21, 1959, she married EDWIN RATZLAFF. He passed away on February 23, 2007.

Survivors include: her four daughters, Wilda Wagner and husband Rob of Lincoln, NE, Cheryl Goertzen and husband Kerry of Inman, KS, Twila Loewen and husband Gary of Scottsdale, AZ, and Verda Salberg and husband John of Overland Park, KS; two brothers, John Classen of Topeka, KS, and Menno Classen and wife Susanna of Aurora, NE; five sisters, Martha Baerg and husband Henry of Mt. Lake, MN, Ann Classen of Meade, KS, Alma Regier of Meade, KS, Arlene Stoesz and husband Jr. of Mt. Lake, MN, and Leona Buller and husband Harold of Hillsdale, OK; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

DOUGLASS - Linda I. Goossen, 72, Douglass, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her home. She was born May 9, 1937, in Meade, to Peter L. and Katherine Isaac Classen.

She graduated from Meade Bible Academy in 1955, and from Grace Bible Institute in 1960. She was a member of Cumberland Bible Church, Douglass. She was a homemaker.

On June 11, 1959, she married ALVA F. GOOSSEN at Meade. Other survivors and their families include: two sons, John M. and Sue, Oakville, Ontario, and children, Missy and Josh, and Waldo J. and Lynette, Nairobi, Kenya and children Naomi, Jeremy and Elijah, Eldora and Randy Brock, Derby, and children, Timothy, Cynthia and Stephanie; four sisters, Agnes Schertz, Goshen, Ind., Dora Ehman, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, Alvera Thiessen, Elbing, Ev Fisher, Wichita; and two brothers, Levi Classen, Liberal, and Clarence Classen, Olathe.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, Edward, Peter, Jakob and Harold Classen and a sister, Elizabeth Loewen.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Plevna Community Bible Church, with Dr. Alva F. Goossen, and Pastor David E. Green presiding. OKLAHOMA CITY - Edna Marguerite Jantzen, 67, died Sept. 27, 2009. She was born Jan. 24, 1942, in Ashland, to Winton and Cora Holler Cook.
In 1959, she married EVERETT JANTZEN. He survives. Other survivors include: her children, Coralee "Corey" and Richard Chew, Samuel Jantzen and April Delaney, Martha Burns, Elizabeth and JR Miller, and Joseph and Suzie; seven grandchildren, Julia, Robin, Bobby, Cory, Christina, Emily, and Caitlynn; brothers, Milo and Marge Cook, and Tom and Olga Cook; sisters-in-law, Leona Nusz, and Mary Cook Holler; brother-in-law, Bill McDonald; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pheba May Zahn, 90, of Abilene, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at the Village Manor nursing home.
She was born May 6, 1919, the second of two daughters, to Harry and Nora Counseller of Strong City.
She graduated from Strong City High School in 1937 and married CHARLES EDWARD ZAHN, also of Strong City, on Dec. 24, 1946. The couple moved to Abilene in 1950. Pheba was a stay-at-home mom until the 1960s when she took a position as the bookkeeper for the Abilene School Lunch program, a position she held until her retirement. Her hobbies included reading newspapers, books, magazines, and catalogs; working puzzle books and trying new recipes.
Survivors include her daughter, Sally Zahn of Chadron, Neb.; son, Martin Zahn of Wamego and his wife Sandra Zahn of Onaga; three grandchildren, Jessica Zahn Johnson and husband Tony of Prairie Village, Brendan Zahn of Cooksville, Tenn., Allison Pinckney and husband David of Manhattan; and two great-grandchildren, Trinity Zahn and Antonin Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, John; husband,?Charles; and sister, Hazel Drummond.
Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Strong City Cemetery.

Craig, Conrad 1875-1948 - Conrad Craig, 72, of 211 South Twenty-fourth street, a retired laborer, died Monday (July 10, 1948) at 5 p.m. in a local hospital following a brief illness. He had been a patient for the last eight days. Death was attributed to complications.
Mr. Craig was born Nov. 10, 1875, in Russia and came to the US in 1900, first settling in Indiana. He brought his family to Montana in 1925 and lived at Great Falls before moving to Yellowstone county about 16 years ago. He was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church.
Surviving are the widow, MRS. ELIZABETH CRAIG; three daughters, Mrs. George Ostermiller of 623 South Thirty-fifth street, Mrs. Jake Bohl of 521 South Twenty-fifth street, and Mrs. Fred Sielbach of 102 South Thirty-third street; four sons, Peter Craig of 523 South Twenty-fifth street, Adam Craig of Los Angeles, Robert Craig of Burr Oak MI, and Jack Craig of Napoleon OH; two brothers, John and Jake of Fort Wayne IN; a sister, Mrs. George Hausch of Akron OH; 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
