Leona Asper - Oct. 1, 1921 - May 17, 2007 - Age 85 - Residence Greeley - Tribute
Born near Hays, Kan., in Emmerman, a community that no longer exists, Leona Alberta Asper was the daughter of "Volga River Germans" whose ancestors immigrated to the United States from Russia in the late 1880s. She grew up in Emmerman and learned English only after she entered grammar school.
She often attended the world-famous "Cathedral of the Plains" Catholic Church in Victoria, Kan., where she received her first communion and confirmation. Her early life was in many ways typified by the hardships of the difficult depression era. She struggled for basic necessities through hard manual labor and long hours both at home and at whatever jobs could be found. In 1940, she married Martin Karlin and moved to Colby, Kan. He is deceased.
In 1954, she married Merle ASPER and moved to Greeley. He is deceased.
Mrs. Asper and her husband were active in the Greeley Elks Club and enjoyed travel in the United States and worldwide with their Elks friends. In 1998, Mrs. Asper was recognized for her many hours of work and contributions as "Doe of the Year."
Mrs. Asper worked in the medical field as a medical and dental assistant and later as a pharmacist's assistant in the Greeley while continuing her education at Aims Community College.
She and her husband were known for their annual theme parties, often spending several weeks decorating and preparing food. For many years, during the Christmas holidays, they would dress as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and deliver her homemade snacks and small gifts to local convalescent homes.
Mrs. Asper was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was grateful for the support and assistance from its "helping hands" organization.
Her family says that Mrs. Asper "especially wanted to recognize and thank one last time all the many friends and neighbors ... who assisted her over the last several years."
Mrs. Asper died in her sleep of natural causes Thursday at Kenton Manor, Greeley.
Survivors: Two sons, Vern Karlin of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Frank Karlin of St. Augustine, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Bob Dinkel of Aurora, and a sister, Shirley Lindsay of Hays, Kan.
Services: Instead of memorial services, Mrs. Asper chose to donate her body to science so that others may benefit from medication research and training.
Note: Leona Asper was born Leona Dinkel, Daughter of Peter J. P. and Mary B. (Brungardt) Dinkel. Sister of Alfred M. Dinkel who passed away September 1, 2003
