From Tribute to Kathy (Taylor) O'Malley
She was the second of two children born to Johannah Leona (Ehrlich) and Robert Roy Taylor. On 31 August 1966, Kathy married John Joseph "Jack" O'Malley in Las Vegas, NV. They had no children. In 1970, they moved to Mt. Ida, AR.
On 8 July 2003, Kathy O¹Malley died in Hot Springs, AR. She had been ill a short time when she succumbed to liver cancer. She was 74 years old. She is survived by her husband Jack O¹Malley, her sister Annette (Mrs. John) Armstrong, and three nieces: Janet (Mrs. David) Blau, Carol (Mrs. Terrence) Wilkins, and Kathryn Armstrong.
She also left behind many friends in genealogy -- many admirers of her tireless work in Volga German research. She will be remembered by them for her amazing ability to sort out and to connect families from the Lower Volga villages; for the extensive records she kept; and for the generosity with which she shared her information with other researchers. She was THE authority on Muehlberg/Shcherbakovka and on the Ehrlich family, among other Lower Volga villages and families. Not only did Kathy share what she knew with others, she also urged contribution of information from those who had gathered data and stories on their own family lines. She made us contributors, not just recipients.
About 1991, Kathy O¹Malley and Ardath Herbel served together as Village Research Coordinators for Shcherbakovka. They collected information, noted sources, put the data on computer, and shared it with researchers and AHSGR, Kathy edited the Dreispitz, Muehlberg / Shcherbakovka Sheet from its inception in June 1994 through its growth and name-change to The Lower Volga Villages Sheet, concluding with the Nov. 2001 issue. Rolene Kiesling has been the editor since May 2002.
Kathy published her own family history in 1997: The Ehrlichs, Volga German Millers, from Shcherbakovka, Russia, to Marion, Kansas. This work preserves her family heritage. It also sets a goal and an example for others.
Kathy O¹Malley initiated the Lower Volga Villages Project and continued to be its guiding force. Its purpose, in her own words: "In 1997, the Lower Volga Villages Project was organized to gain a better understanding and perspective of our Volga German ancestors. Our purpose is to combine research and fund-raising efforts for the nine German-Russian mother colonies of the Galka and Stephan parishes. As descendants, our purpose is to learn all we can about these ancestors and keep their memory alive. The volunteer contact for each village is establishing a village data base and sharing information. We need additional data from all descendants in order to fulfill our purpose. We work with AHSGR Village Coordinators and make regular reports which are on file at AHSGR in Lincoln, Nebraska."
When the professional research from Russia arrived, Kathy O¹Malley and Janet Flickinger extracted the data from the Pleve charts. They assigned coordinates to each chart, making it possible to locate individual names with a reference number. They then made an index for each chart. At AHSGR conventions, Kathy hosted a table at Village Night (often Shcherbakovka). She also led a Lower Volga Village Project meeting, where she would introduce the Village Coordinators and other involved people, and present information on current Project work. There was usually an informational speaker. This meeting provided a setting for individuals to visit with their village coordinator/s. There were often pertinent hand-outs. Publications of interest for this group were also available for sale at this meeting.
In the autumn of 1998, Kathy initiated a new obituary project. Beginning with a floppy disk of obits she had on file, she proposed an alphabetical, ever-growing computer collection of obits of the Lower Volga Village Germans and their descendants. She recruited Rachel Smith as chairman of the obituary project to continue to gather and enter into safe-keeping these biographical accounts. Kathy also asked Edith Bottsford to enter shorter versions of the obits on the web pages.
Kathy served on the Review Committee for GRHC for Volga German Villages Map 3, a two-sided, colored, laminated map, that became available April 2003.
Many who called Kathy a friend never met her in person. They knew her only by letters, and e-mails, and "by her good works." Kathy O¹Malley has left a hole in the community of Volga German researchers but she also has left a shining legacy of work and friendship. Thank you, Kathy!
