From the Marion Record, Marion, Kansas - August 17, 1905
It is doubtful if ever in the history of Marion county so many people followed the remains of any person to Highland Cemetery as followed those of Jacob Ehrlich. He was among the first of the Russian settlers to come to our part of the county of the thousands who afterwards came. The writer seldom attends a funeral, but out of pure respect for the deceased, I went to the little church of which he was pastor, in fact could not get near it because of the numbers who had preceded me. I looked over the throng of people, he scores of young ladies decendants of the Russians who had come to us because of the religious oppression, in the past 83 years, with their bright intelligent faces, their good strong healthy bodies, grown up as they have on farms, and I could but compare them with the daughters of Vanderbilt’s, Morgan’s, Astor’s and others of the rich classes of Americans and think what would the daughter of one of these parties give to have the health and strength of the happy Marion country girl. Jacob Ehrlich was born in Russia January 1, 1847. He was married to his cousin, Anna EHRLICH, in 1866. Fourteen children were born to them of whom 12 are still living. He came to America in 1867 with his family.
