From The Star-Herald, Scottsbluff, NE - from 9/13/2009 - 9/15/2009

Submitted by Mark B. Wills.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. - Betty Jane Lorraine Green Bauer Newton was born on July 10, 1929 in Bayard to John and Marie Green, the fifth of six children. For the next 80 years, Betty did her best to teach life how it should be lived.
While attending Gering High School she was a baton twirler, a nurse's aide at the local hospital and a much sought after partner at all the dances. After graduation she attended Grand Island Beauty School and became a cosmetologist.
In September of 1949 Betty married HENRY BAUER, JR., Jr. in a civil ceremony, and they settled into life in Scottsbluff where they had three children, James Edward, Deborah Ann, and Henry John. In 1964 the family moved to Anaheim, Calif. where Betty continued to work as a beauty operator. Whether in Nebraska or California, she was always in demand from a devoted clientele who en-joyed her listening ear and crazy antics.
In 1974, Hank and Betty moved north to Live Oak, Calif. to escape the "rat race," and take life a little slower. It was then Betty returned to being a nurse's aide. In 1977 she lost her beloved Hank to a heart attack and decided to move to "town." Betty bought a house in Marysville, Calif. where she continued working as an aide and lived a full single life until she met her second husband, LOUIS HARTWELL NEWTON. The couple savored 17 years of fishing, camping, gardening, and canning until Louis passed away in 1998.
Betty was a fun-loving hostess and had many visitors, friends and family. She was always up to a trip to the local casino to play her dollar slots, smoke her cigarettes and drink some white wine.
Throughout her life, in spite of being a working mom when most stayed home, Betty was always devoted to her children. She served as a room mother, taking time off work to bring homemade baked goods to her children's classrooms. There was never a time that any of those she loved could not count on her for love and support. And she never lost her sense of humor, the twinkle in her eyes, or her infectious smile.
On Monday night Aug. 31, 2009 Betty passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by friends and family.
Survivors include her three children, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends and admirers. Contributions in lieu of flowers should be sent to the Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center or to Sutter North Hospice. Go with God, our beloved, and keep on jitter-bugging, twirling, and pulling on those slot machines in heaven!
