STAHL, Lillian

b. 14 November 1980

d. 18 Apr 2008 - Billings, Montana

From Billings Gazette, Billings, MT - 20 Apr 2008, Submitted by Henry L. Schmick

On November 14, 1980 we were blessed with an angel. Lillian "Lilly" Stahl was a special young lady that was talented, thoughtful, and had a joyful soul. The apple of her Parents eyes. Lilly had a kind heart that she shared with many. After growing up at Deerfield Colony she decided that she would like to become a nurse. She left the colony and successfully acquired her Nursing Degree in Lewistown Montana. Her whole family was so proud of her. She worked at Billings Clinic and Summit Surgery Center. She loved working as a nurse in the O.R. and felt that she could help people. Lilly set many goals and had high expectations for herself which she accomplished. She made people smile and everyone was touched by her loving upbeat personality. Lilly relished life and lived every day as though there was no tomorrow. Her joyous spirit was felt in any room that she entered. Lilly loved to decorate wedding cakes, varnish furniture, and play with her nieces and nephews, whom she loved.
April 18, 2008 in Billings, Montana Lilly was taken by angels to heaven to be with her parents John and Elizabeth (Lizzy) Stahl. The choir was waiting for her. She is singing with the angels in heaven now.
Lilly is survived by her brothers whom she loved dearly; Arnie and John, four sisters Carol (Jason) Blackford, Doris (Rudy) Hruska, Malissa (John) Carr, Janet (Mark) Wipf and her grandmother Rebecca Stahl, and four nieces and nephews Jasmine and Jesse Hruska, Scarlett and Troy Wipf. Many Aunts and Uncles and Cousins will miss her also.
Lilly, we will miss you so much. Our hearts ache for you and we long to see your pretty smile. We want you to sashay into a room and tell us that your still here with us. Who are we going to grow old with? Who is going to spoil our children? We love you and our hearts are broken. You were taken from us too early. May you have the joy now that you gave everyone else. Enjoy your parents and remember we will never forget you. You were the sunshine in our lives.
Visitation is being conducted at this time at the Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown. Funeral Services will be in Lewistown, Montana, 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Celebration Community Fellowship Church 361 W. Frontage Road of Lewistown. Harvey had a great love for the land and farming and always enjoyed teaching his family the finer points of agriculture. He took pride in plowing a straight furrow and planting a straight row, just so he lived his life. He had a deep love for his children and grandchildren, as they were his pride and joy, always following their activities and encouraging them. He was a very gentle man and welcomed his children's and grandchildren's spouses into his family with open arms. He also liked to reload ammunition and looked forward to doing the word search puzzle in the Star-Herald.
He was a lifetime member of the Zion Evangelical Church and had served a term of eight years as a church deacon.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Emma; his son and daughter-in-law, Harvey Joe and Dee Stricker of Bayard; his daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Dave Dietrich of Scottsbluff; his grandchildren, Valerie Dietrich and her fiancé Ryan Kimball of Kasson, Minn., Ashley and her husband Jake Robbins of Scottsbluff and Amanda Stricker, Katlyn Stricker, Aimee Stricker and Kristyn Stricker, all of Bayard, his great-granddaughter, Emma Robbins of Scottsbluff and his faithful dog and companion Buck.
His parents, brothers Albert and Leo and sisters Lavada Hufford and Deloris Funk preceded him in death.

STROH, Gerda Freia

Parents from Frank, Russia, Spouse's parents from Brunnental, Russia

b. 4 Jul 1914 - Grand Island, Nebraska

d. 11 Mar 2008 - Evergreen, Colorado

From information received - Wednesday, March 12, 2008, Submitted by Elaine McDowell

Gerda Freia Stroh was born July 4, 1914 in Grand Island, NE, the fifth of six children and first daughter of Johann Stroh and Maria Katherina Borgens from Frank, Russia. She died March 11, 2008 at the age of 93 in Evergreen, CO.
Being from an immigrant family, Gerda learned to translate the antique German typeface from printed and handwritten script while she was still in grade school and later during her confirmation classes. She graduated from Lincoln High School (Lincoln, NE) in 1933. On December 24, 1941, just one evening ahead of her sweetheart being shipped overseas to the Pacific war theater, Gerda married Daniel WALKER. Dan's parents were Emmanuel A. Wacker from Brunnental, Russia and Christina Ross from McCook, NE. Gerda and Daniel had three children: Stephen Daniel born 1947, Suzanne Christine Nauman born 1949, and Sandra Marie Kugler born 1954. Gerda and Daniel were together until September 2000 when Daniel died.
Gerda was one of the founding members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Denver CO in 1956. She was also a founder of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) in 1968 and was genealogy chair of the AHSGR for many years.
Gerda was instrumental in researching, editing and bringing to publication a significant sociological study done (circa 1909-1915) by Dr. Hattie Plum Williams, and in 1975 the book “The Czar's Germans,” based on Dr. Willians’s study, came into being and was first published under the auspices of the AHSGR.
Still hungry for information on her ancestors, Gerda searched out books and periodicals with data on Germans from Russia. In 1998, Gerda wrote and self-published her translation and indexing of biographical data from Die Welt Post (The World Post) Vol I 1916-1921. The newspaper was the only one in the United States printed in the antique German-Russian script, and Gerda took great pains to collect and accurately translate every mention of those people with German-Russian background. The index should be a valuable resource for modern Americans searching for data on their German-Russian ancestors. Gerda was a great collector of her family history and traveled to the Volga region three times and to Germany twice in search of additional historical data.
